The Arctic Council Sustainable Development Program (SD Program)The Arctic Council Sustainable Development Program was established at the Ministerial meeting in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, in September 1998. The Terms of Reference for the SD Program were also agreed to in Iqaluit.
The Sustainable Development Framework Document was adopted by the Ministerial meeting in Barrow in 2000, outlining the elements of the SD Program and identifying six subject areas under the heading of sustainable development of special importance:
- Health issues and the well-being of people living in the Arctic
- Sustainable economic activities and increasing community prosperity
- Education and cultural heritage
- Management of natural, including living, resources
- Infrastructure development
Various projects in these and related fields have been established within the auspices of the SDWG since its establishment.
The Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG)The SDWG was established at the Arctic Council Ministerial meeting in Iqaluit, Nunavut, Canada, in September, 1998.
The current Chair of the Working Group is Denmark/Greenland/Faroe Islands
The SDWG SecretariatThe SDWG Secretariat began operations in January, 2003 in Ottawa, Canada and provides ongoing support to the SDWG and its members in a manner similar to other permanent secretariats for the Arctic Council's environmental working groups, AMAP, CAFF, EPPR and PAME.
